Safeguarding Strategies for Purim

Purim is one of our most joyful and exuberant holidays. Its relaxed and festive atmosphere, however, can increase the risk of boundaries being crossed and harm occurring. Much of this risk can be reduced through thoughtful, proactive planning.
Join Sacred Spaces for a conversation about safeguarding–for both children and adults–that draws from your real concerns. When registering, you will have the opportunity to share specific questions you have or a description of the Purim program you are running. Topics may include:
- Supervision
- Alcohol
- How to balance welcoming new people with keeping everyone safe
- Addressing situations in which the levity of Purim is used to excuse unwelcome behavior
- Responding to offensive costumes without creating a sense of over-policing
This training is particularly geared for synagogue or JCC staff and volunteers, as well as anyone else running a Purim program in their community spaces or homes, including Purim seudas at a rabbi or teacher’s home.
